Big Picture Items

The business of computer consulting is a tough racket.  Basically I've spent the last 20 years mastering software development as the field has been constantly changing.  At least I've come to the point where people know I'm expensive and I believe I'm worth it.  The problem as I see it is in the economics of the software developer.  While software development can be a lucrative career, where you are on the food chain will determine what kind of house you live in, what kind of wife you have and what kind of car you drive.

Doctors have it the easiest.  I'm guessing they make about $100 for 5 minutes of work, some of that money comes from patients the rest is subsidized by insurance companies.

Next, lawyers have a great setup even though they can't charge the equivalent of what a doctor charges, they have their clients by the balls and can make up a number of what they will stick it to you.  They hire teams of paralegals so they can justify their fees with ungodly hours of busywork.

Finally there is the software developer, who's fees range from $50/hr to $150/hr.  Some projects last a couple of hours, but those are just troubleshooting.  Many jobs last several months and can involve multiple coders of various levels.  Your success depends on your clientele, with the corporate clients the best.  There are several dogs out there who think they are paying for a comodity and that is a whole different book.  I've met people who made millions and others who have been unemployed for extended periods.  I've been lucky, but haven't hit the lotto in software development, yet, but where there is a pc, mac, iphone, internet, there is hope.  The most important ingredient is the client and getting money out of them involves a significant amount of hustling.
