Not bad advice.  Don't forget the thousands of hours rock stars worked on their craft before they earned their status.  There are about a million not rock stars for every one star so don't expect overnight success, if any.

Tip for May 15, 2010

If you spent one day a week answering noob questions on a message board or two (concentrate on the most active or prestigous ones if they exist) it could help establish you as an expert in your field.  Follow it up with a book or articles, and you have a winner.  I'm not even sure you'd need a blog, but that wouldn't hurt either.  Maybe you could write about each problem you solved.
