A Behavioral Theory of the Firm

I love reading old business books that print the source code for models the authors' build in old computer languages.  A Behavioral Theory of the Firm is one of those books.  I saw a snippet of this book on Carnegie Mellon's website where they show off the achievements of their most distinguished alumni.  They showed a snapshot of a flowchart of a business process and at that moment I had to pick up the book (thanks Amazon).  I'm just in the initial chapters, but found some good nuggets already:

The following list describes their research strategy:
  1. Focus on a small number of key economic decisions made by the firm.
  2. Develop process-oriented models of the firm.
  3. Link models of the firm as closely as possible to empirical observations.
  4. Develop a theory with generality beyond the specific firms studied.
...Nothing short of a brilliant start to a seminal work.

Why go to college?

Why bother going to college?  If you want to write code for a living then just do it.  If you are good...one of the best...then you'll easily land a job at a tech company....

...keeping the job and maintaining a good life/work balance...that is a whole 'nother issue.

Real-world app CodeSprint

Dear Interviewstreet Participant,

Hope you're doing awesome! We've an exciting contest this week - Build a real-world application (mobile or a web app) for the US govt.

As you might already know, we're working with the US Govt to develop an application that promotes equal pay for women - equalpayapp.interviewstreet.com. While the link is already live, we still decided to conduct a special sprint for 8 hours this Saturday (12 noon - 8pm PT) to showcase the apps that are built in this timeline to our entire developer community along with special prizes from Interviewstreet for the one that receives maximum votes! (Here's an example web-app)

You can have a look at the problem statement, develop ideas and start hacking at Saturday 12 noon to show the world what you've built. You'll be given a bare unix EC2 instance to deploy your web app. For programmers designing mobile apps, we're working with Pieceable to display your code in an iPhone simulator.

Brainstorm ideas/prototypes and lets hack this Saturday at 12 noon (add to your calendar). We'll be on IRC (#codesprint) during the time. Interestingly, the devs at interviewstreet are also going to build an app.

As a request, can you please let us know here if you will/may be participating? Look forward to seeing you there. If you've any queries, you can contact us at support@interviewstreet.com
